Dance Basics

Dance exams can be nerve wracking so it’s vital that you or your child can feel confident in the clothes and shoes that they’re about to perform in. Both the Royal Academy of Dance and the Imperial Society of Dance which run most of the UK’s dance exams have strict rules about what should be worn during an exam.

The rules are designed to ensure dancers can perform in comfort and safety and on a level playing field with the other candidates. Failure to wear the correct uniform can result in you or your child being disqualified.

Luckily at Dance Depot we know what RAD and ISTD require so we can supply you or your child with exactly what you need to give the best performance. Our examination range has been approved by these dance organisations so if you need ISTD ballet uniforms or a RAD leotard we can help.

Our June, Amy and Angela leotards pass the test for all the lower grades. We can also advise on and supply the regulation uniform for the more advanced dancer such as the Adagio leotard range which is approved for taking examinations at the ISTD. Their regulation colours of plum, sky blue, navy or purple are held in stock or can be easily ordered in, so you can have plenty of time to wear in your dance exam clothes before the big event.

We also offer regulation circular, character and wrap skirts, RAD approved seamed ballet tights and other dance exam clothes such as warm up cardigans. RAD and ISTD stipulate that the correct shoes should be worn and we can give advice about the right pair of shoes that will pass the test. Exam rules also state that clothes and shoes must fit properly and that no underwear should show. We can supply the correct underwear so you can dance in confidence knowing that everything will be in place throughout your routine.

There’s nothing more satisfying than wearing the right clothes for the right occasion and in an exam when you need to concentrate on the task in hand, wearing the right clothes and shoes that flatter and fit well will definitely boost your chances of gaining top marks.
